Modelado geométrico de estructuras anatómicas para análisis por elementos finitos

Las estructuras anatómicas son objetos físicos que representan cualquier parte del cuerpo humano, las cuales ocupan un espacio y se pueden distinguir de su entorno. El método de elementos finitos (EF) ha sido utilizado recientemente para el estudio de algunas de estas estructuras, que generalmente hacen parte del sistema óseo.
En este libro se presentan las características principales de un framework que integra diferentes algoritmos y métodos para la generación de mallas de superficie de estructuras anatómicas complejas aptas para simulaciones por EF. Este framework recibe como entrada una imagen médica, a partir de la cual se reconstruye la geometría de las diferentes partes que conforman la estructura anatómica. Para completar el modelo, se realizan dos procesos adicionales: uno de suavizado y otro de simplificación.
Los modelos geométricos obtenidos contienen un alto porcentaje de triángulos de buena calidad, de tamaño uniforme y adaptados a la curvatura de la estructura anatómica, lo que facilita la investigación y aplicación práctica en simulaciones por EF. Así mismo, cuando la estructura anatómica está compuesta de varias regiones, el modelo geométrico garantiza que las interfaces de las regiones no se traslapen entre sí, lo que ayuda, por un lado, a evitar que haya triángulos invertidos y, por otro, a garantizar la convergencia de las simulaciones por EF.
